Message from Chairman, English

The Department of English, The People’s University of Bangladesh, started its academic activity in July 1996 as a pioneering department among the private universities of Bangladesh under the leadership of a renowned academic of the country, Dr. Ahsanul Haque, the former Professor and Chairman, Department of English, University of Dhaka.

Over the years, the Department has become a spot of learning and enlightenment. It has a team of qualified full-time faculty members along with some illustrious guest faculty members from other universities. It offers one of the best opportunities in the country for higher degrees in English studies. It takes special care to stimulate the critical and the creative faculties of the students in a homely atmosphere.

The Department of English regularly publishes its wall magazine, titled “Treenayon,” under the supervision of its Language and Literary Club to provide a space for the students to demonstrate their creativity. It often arranges afternoon shows of films/movies based on famous literary classics.

Overview

The Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English is a 4-year under graduate program of 141 credits. Along with sufficient Core and Elective courses of having importance in the arena of local, regional, and global English studies, a number of multidisciplinary courses have been included in the curriculum of this program as General Education courses to make the students competent for the competitive examinations as well as to inculcate moral and cultural values, managerial capacity, gender sensitivity, and global knowledge in the students. There are also two Capstone courses in the curriculum for developing students communicative and research skills.

Mission

The Department of English has set up the following missions to reach the above-mentioned vision:

  • To convey the highest possible standard of teaching and research to the students to make them competent as global citizens
  • To help students develop analytical and creative faculties as well as communicative competence in English
  • To make the students aware of the local and global history and culture, and to develop interpersonal relationship for sustainable development
  • To produce skilled graduates with digital literacy and leadership quality to face the challenges of the local and global job markets.
  • To inculcate ethical sense, moral values, environmental consciousness, and gender sensitivity in the students.
  • To engage the students in research works, and make them recognize the importance of life-long learning for the development of the country

Vision

The Department of English of The People’s University of Bangladesh strives to produce skilled graduates with digital literacy and a deep moral and cultural values to compete in the local and global job markets and to engage themselves in research works and life-long learning for the sustainable development of the country.

Objective

The objectives of the Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English program are:

  • To make the graduates capable to evaluate and appreciate literary texts, their genres, and devices, as well as compare different literary forms.
  • To develop graduates’ ability to apply different theories and critical concepts of both literature and linguistics in appropriate situations.
  • To help the graduates develop critical understanding of society, culture, literature, history etc. of Bangladesh and other countries of the world.
  • To help the graduates communicate and interact effectively with confidence, and express ideas spontaneously both in Bangla and English
  • To assist the graduates to acquire digital literacy, scientific and environmental knowledge required for personal and professional life
  • To help the graduates acquire and apply civil literacy and humanitarian knowledge to contribute to the development of the society
  • To instill moral values, gender sensitivity, and environmental consciousness in the graduates to practice in personal, academic and professional life
  • To encourage the graduates to be engaged in research work which would benefit people in some ways.
  • To help the graduates achieve fundamental knowledge and organizational behavior necessary for teaching and other professions.

Intended Learning Outcome (ILO)

By the end of the Bachelor of Arts with Honors in English program, students will be able to:

  • Evaluate and appreciate literary texts, their genres, and devices, as well as compare different literary forms.
  • Apply different theories and critical concepts of both literature and linguistics in appropriate situations.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of society, culture, literature, history etc. of home and abroad.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and clearly, and express ideas fluently and spontaneously both in Bangla and English
  • Display digital literacy, scientific and environmental knowledge required for personal and professional development.
  • Apply and exercise civil literacy, and knowledge of human rights and good governance to contribute in the development of the society.
  • Display moral and ethical sense as well as philosophical and psychological understanding in personal and professional life.
  • Engage themselves in authentic research work, and recognize the importance of lifelong learning for sustainable development.
  • Demonstrate the fundamental knowledge and organizational behavior necessary for teaching and other professions.

Eligibility for Admission

Students who have any of the following qualifications may apply for the admission to BA (Honors) in English program:

  • Students who have passed SSC, and HSC, or equivalent public examinations with at least two 2nd divisions, or minimum GPA 2.5 in each (5.00 scale) may apply for admission. Students who have minimum 2.00 in any one of SSC, or HSC, and a total of GPA 6.00 may also apply.
  • For English medium students, minimum 5 subjects in “O” level, and 2 subjects in “A” level examinations are required. At least Grade B, or GPA 4.0 in four subjects out of the seven subjects, and at least Grade C, or GPA 3.5 in the remaining three subjects (A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, and E=1).
  • The children of freedom fighters with a total of GPA 5.0 in both SSC, and HSC, or in equivalent public examinations may apply for admission with a copy of the Freedom Fighter Certificate issued by the Government.
